This is the last look back at 2008’s gaming in general, I promise.
*ahem*
I thank you in advance for reading this awards “show”. I hope you will enjoy these three awards.
AWARD #1
The “The Second Chance” Award
When I first tried Far Cry 2, I hated it. And not secretly, either. I showed my “appreciation” to this game by verbally tearing it a new asshole all around the internet and it’s vast amounts of gaming and non-gaming related messageboards, quoting myself;
* I’ve never played the original one, or either of the Crysis’ for that matter, but this game gave me the exact feelings as Doom 3 did. “Hey, nice engine. But where’s the game?”.
* It was a long journey, and after tiresomely emptying around 10 checkpoints on the way, I decided to go ninja on one of them. I left my car at a safe spot, sneaked around the checkpoint to a hill and proceeded to snipe the wankers inside with my pistol. After they were taken care of, I heard cracking behind me and turned around just to see a car coming from nowhere and running me over. This would’ve been okay if it wasn’t for the following facts: 1. There was only one car in the checkpoint, and it was still there when I heard the crack. 2. Behind me was a huge lake.
* I then noticed that my last save was at that very Safe House I was going to, two hours earlier, at the start of the mission I just completed. I then proceeded to uninstall the piece of shit from my computer and burn the CD in a bonfire.
I later was at a friend’s house for a small LAN party, and saw him playing Far Cry 2. A twitch inside me fueled a desire to try it out again and when I did, I fell in love with it. Embarrassed, I had to swallow my pride and tell everyone that I “might have” judged the game a wee-bit hastily. I just couldn’t hate the game when, even at the lowest graphic settings, it looked so amazing. None-the-less, for Far Cry 2, it was a “from rags to riches” success story. Good on Ubisoft, I guess.
